Georgy Vasilyev — is a symphonic and opera conductor, representing the younger generation of Russian maestros, actively working with both classical and contemporary repertoire.
In 2018, while studying at the Viktor Popov Academy of Choral Art, he started his training in symphonic conducting under Denis Vlasenko. It was during this period that his interest in symphonic and operatic conducting took shape, later becoming the foundation of his professional path.
In 2019, Georgy Vasiliev entered the Saint Petersburg State Conservatory named after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, where he studied symphonic and opera conducting with Professor Alexander Alexeev, student of Hans Swarowski and a long-time head of the conducting department, and Yuri Lebedev, professor of Saint-Petersburg and Weimar Conservatories. Georgy's conducting education organically combined the traditions of the German, Saint Petersburg, and Moscow schools. During his years of study, he actively participated in competitions, festivals, and masterclasses, working under the guidance of leading contemporary conductors, including Vladimir Fedoseyev, Vladimir Spivakov, Yuri Simonov, Yuri Bashmet, Fabio Mastrangelo, among others.
Georgy Vasiliev made his operatic debut in 2021 at the Hermitage Theatre, conducting Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. In subsequent seasons, he appeared as conductor and music director of several opera productions, including La Traviata and Don Carlo by Giuseppe Verdi, The Queen of Spades by Tchaikovsky, and Aleko by Sergei Rachmaninoff. His operatic work has included collaborations with stage directors such as Yuri Alexandrov, Gennady Shaposhnikov, and others.
Since 2023, Georgy Vasiliev has served as Artistic Director of the Symphony Orchestra of Saint Petersburg State University.
Between 2022 and 2025, he performed regularly with various orchestras at major concert venues in Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Rostov, Yaroslavl, and other cities across Russia. Notable concert projects include the first performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Six Choruses in an orchestral version (Veliky Novgorod, 2022), as well as the preparation and performance of Richard Strauss’s symphony Aus Italien in Saint Petersburg (2024). Contemporary music occupies a special place in his artistic activity: Georgy Vasiliev regularly performs at the Saint Petersburg Composers’ House, taking part in premieres and composer-led projects.
In 2024, Georgy graduated with honors from the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and was admitted to the postgraduate assistantship program in Moscow, studying with Professor Vladimir Ponkin.
In the summer of the same year, he made his debut as a guest conductor at the St. Petersburg Chamber Musical Theatre Saint Petersburg Opera and was subsequently appointed as a staff conductor of the theatre.
